First hike of 2016. Forecast had a minimal chance of snow, but it was snowing steadily and the wind gusts were very strong. Snow was at minimal depths, but ice was present throughout most of the hike. Traction is definitely helpful, but type is up to you. We saw people with crampons and with yaktraxs. We wore microspikes and were fine.
Until temperatures really start to drop the rivers are not going to freeze over and the ice on them is very thin. With such minimal snow, butt sliding is extremely limited so that fun aspect of winter hiking is out right now.
Hopefully we get some more snow in the coming weeks. |
