Used snowshoes the entire way, but probably would have been better off switching to crampons for the decent of N. Hancock. About 3-5" of new snow, with drifts up to about 12" at some places between peaks. Still too uneven due to underlying rocks/logs underneath for easy snowshoeing, but snow a bit deep and loose for crampons. Very windy and quite cold up on S. Hancock, but the cold across the ridge kept LY and I moving along briskly. However the view point on N. Hancock was somewhat sheltered from the wind so we could have a snack there and look into the greyness. Felt like winter out there today, unlike most hikes so far this season. |
