Comments
Comments: I did not bring snowshoes today. I was able to get by with boots and microspikes but I think snowshoes were the right footwear for today's hike. There were some awkward places for the snowshoes but for most of the distance snowshoes are preferable. Bare booting required more effort as they sunk in by three or four inches and there was resistance by the snow. Even Signal Ridge was snow covered. The stairs on the observation tower were coated in snow so I could keep the traction on. Sawyer River Road was compressed snow from the snowmobile activity. I used Sawyer River Road rather than the parallel lower route from the parking area. It looked like the lower route may require crossing tributaries that were high.
The hiker from Brunswick ME as well as a group of hikers with Larry wore snowshoes. Two young trail joggers were bare booting.
The Desolation Trail and Carrigain Notch trails were unbroken.
