Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossings of Thompson and Spruce brooks were doable by rock hops with some under water. Mo ice on rocks today but may soon have slippery coasted rocks. The snowmobile bypass can avoid the brook crossings with only short bushwhacks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in good condition. Even the herd path had some trees cut although there were a few blowdowns that are easy to get around.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw many dogs today. Trail is good for dogs with plenty of water today. The Garfield Ridge Trail has some icy spots.

Comments: Garfield : Garfield Ridge : herd path to Garfield Pond : FR 92 walk

The hike seemed more like a Spring hike during the melting season. There was a lot of mud and running water on the trails. Most often there were sufficient rocks in the path to keep the boots above much of the mud. When the weather turns cooler the running and standing water will turn to ice and make for slippery footing. The MicroSpikes were not required today. I decided to take the herd path to Garfield Pond. The start of the path is marked by a small pile of sticks low to the ground within sight of a bright blue blaze near a slight bend in the Garfield Trail and proceeds on relatively level ground around the base on the Garfield summit cone. There was a nice view of Mt Lafayette across the mostly frozen pond. Great view from Mt Garfield's open summit. Fed two Gray Jays at the peak. Lots of hikers out on Christmas.
