Trails
Trails: Signal Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 5, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking at the Signal Ridge trailhead on Sawyer River Road. The road was still open and snow-free, but I suspect after this weekend it may close for the winter.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing of Carrigain Brook is easy right now. On the descent I took an old segment of the Signal Ridge Trail which has two additional crossings, all of which were easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Several stepover blowdowns along the way, but otherwise, this heavily-traveled trail is in fine shape. The second relocation was quite muddy in the afternoon.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure, even saw a few and they looked happy.
Bugs
Bugs: Nope.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: One Nalgene bottle in a sleeve stuck on a branch along the trail on my descent. I believe it may have belonged to a guy I met at the summit, so I left it as I knew he'd be by not long after me.

Comments
Comments: A stunning, crystal clear bluebird day atop Carrigain. I'd been trying to squeeze this in on such a day before the road closes. Views forever and warm temps for December. There was some wind atop the tower, but not bad, maybe 15-20 mph. Trail was mostly dry down low with a dusting of snow, increasing to a few inches at higher elevations. Only a couple of spots of ice to look out for, easily avoided. It was wet ascending as the sun was melting out the trees. Lots of slush between the open walk across Signal Ridge and the summit. Conditions were wetter, muddier and slushier on the way down due to warming temps. I carried light traction but didn't need it. There were still enough rocks sticking up that it would have gotten in the way.

Saw several folks out, including a group celebrating a 4K finish. They picked a heck of a day! Also saw some folks ascending late in the day, hope they were prepared for darkness. Based on yesterday's report by mattmattd, it looks like we may have just missed each other again! At least it wasn't in the Cannon tramway parking lot this time. ;)
