Peaks Mt. Jefferson, NH
Trails
Trails: Jewell Trail, Gulfside, Jefferson Loop
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, November 18, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked at the Base Station. There are no longer posted signs for hikers.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet/Slippery Rock, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: From the Cog Base Station, Jewell is reached by a connector trail beginning at the bottom of wooden steps to the left of the station. The connector immediately crosses a strong flowing brook. The crossing requires rock hopping, which right now can be challenging because of ice on the rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are several major blowdowns that require short bushwhacks. More noteworthy, Jewell could benefit from fresh blazes before the deep snows come.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The snow permitted good traction with no appreciable ice.

Comments
Comments: The trails have a bit of everything right now -- bare trail or dusting of snow initially, but variations from 3 to 12 inches higher up. I put on micro spikes when I reached treeline, and on the traverse of Mt. Clay I found myself postholing on down slopes and kick stepping on up slopes.

As forecast, the weather up top was outstanding with blue skies, low winds, and temperatures in the twenties and thirties. Surprisingly, I only saw one other hiker, who I believe was doing a Presi traverse from Appalachia to Crawford Notch.
