It was a cold, windy, and cloudy in the Whites today. We took Hi-Cannon up and Kinsman Ridge/Lonesome Lake trail back down to make a small loop. The trails are sort of crusty with ice at this point with a dusting of snow. Despite the dusting of snow, we didn't really need spikes going up Hi-Cannon, but after we got up the ladder we decided to put them on as it got a bit more exposed and the trail got a little more slippery. You definitely need spikes coming down either direction. Going up the tower was pretty exciting. We couldn't see much at all, but the wind was whipping at about 35-40 mph, leading to a pretty entertaining summit. Stopped by a packed AMC hut on the way back to the car in order to eat some real food. Winter has made it to the Whites and today was a good warm up for official winter hiking. |
