Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Arrived 1:45PM to a full lot overflowing well beyond the bridge but luckily a few people had already left so I got a spot close to trail head. Not a fee area; no facilities. Parking looked like a MAJOR issue at trail heads all over the Whites. Unprecedented traffic on my way up today. Despite a SAT AM drive up my ride took well over an hour longer than normal. A true nightmare. Rte 93 was stop and go from MA/NH line to Exit 18, 3 mile back up for Lincoln,NH exit, stop and go through Franconia Notch for about a mile around Lafayette, cars parked all over the roads just about anywhere a picture could be taken. Worst I've ever seen in my entire life.

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water was fairly high. Took herd path out/back. 1st and 2nd crossing looked difficult but I made no effort to cross so it may have been possible. 3rd crossing actually wasn't bad. Found a nice line of rocks about 50' below official crossing. Had to step on some rocks under 1-2" of flowing water but they were flat and square so footing was worth it. Saw several people after I crossed seeking out an upstream route so apparently there were several good options to take. Followed same route out in dark with ease. Lot of smaller feeder brooks and streams that had plenty of water and while slick were not a problem.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: In good shape overall. Only real blow down issues were on the unofficial herd path section and they were easy step overs. Drain ditches functioning fine. Few wooden bridges in good shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. Plenty of access to water. No unusually difficult footing.
Bugs
Bugs: none

Comments
Comments: Typical for time of year. Lot of wet spots, running water in trail in spots an quite a bit of mud and slick roots, especially on the herd path and the lower elevations after 3rd crossing. Upper sections had a dusting of snow which was packed on the rocks and very slick in the rough ledges and small scrambles before reaching tree line. Roots and some rocks felt like they were glazed with ice on descent after dark until well down the trail.

Despite all the cars I had the summit and the sunset to myself for 1 h 5 min. Chose this hike hoping it would be off the radar for the holiday weekend and it paid off. Of course wind chill was 15 deg F so that may have been a factor too.
