Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Adams, NH
Trails
Trails: Castle Trail, Israel Ridge Path, Randolph Path, Gulfside, Jefferson Loop, Lowe's Path, Presidential Range Rail Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, August 29, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at Bowman just off route 2. It is a small lot but there was enough space to accommodate the hikers today unlike Appalachia which had vehicles parking up and down the side of route 2. Upon return I found a flier on my windshield warning that there is a push to allow ATVs on the Presidential Range Rail Trail. It requested hikers to write Governor Maggie Hassan, Commissioner Jeffrey Rose, NH Executive Councilor Joseph Kenney, and Senator Jeff Woodburn to point out that the hiking experience on the Northern Presidential Range will be compromised by the noise, dust, and safety concerns of ATVs on the trail.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing of Israel River on the Castle Trail was easy as water level was low. The two crossings of the Israel River and Cascade Brook on the Israel Ridge Path weren't too bad although care must be taken on the slippery and mossy rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails are in good condition. The steps are mostly gone on one of the ladders on the Israel Ridge Path but the adjacent ledge provides adequate footing. Limbs of a fallen tree extend in to Lowe's Path but they are easy to get by. A small saw could cut these branches to clear the trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw many dogs enjoying high peaks. Must be aware that the dogs paws may be abraded by the mica schist rocks above tree line.
Bugs
Bugs: Not many

Comments
Comments: Saw no other hikers on the Israel Ridge Path, the Randolph Path, and the Lowe's path below tree line. These approach paths frequently provide solitude not afforded by Valley Way or the Air Line. The woods below tree line were often carpeted in a bright green moss. Above tree line there were lots of hikers including a scout troop from Hopkinton Ma.
