Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Quite a few river crossings on this route. Most are bridged up to "Bluff" and then generally small and easily crossed, although walking in the water necessary on many (no worse than ankle deep). Crossings of note would be the river at beginning of Six Husbands which required me to work upstream and come back to crossing and the crossing of the flume on Sphinx which had very slick moss covered slab in a tricky area. Water levels dropped about 4 inches from beginning to end of day. Many rocks I stepped on that were under water AM were exposed on the way out.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Pretty good shape overall with less blow downs than I recall. Looked like a lot of recent work in many places. Worst area is on Great Gulf between Six Husbands/Wamsutta junction and Sphinx junction. Quite a few blow downs, many a bit annoying, and a lot of mud, standing water and slick footing. Bridges and other structures I came across were all in very good condition.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Great Gulf and Gulfside fine for dogs. Sphinx OK too although there are tricky places and some ledge scrambles and potential fall areas. I would not under any circumstances take a dog on Six Husbands - vertical ladders, quite a few very steep ledge scrambles and many places where a fall could be catastrophic for dogs (or people for that matter). Didn't see any dogs today.
Bugs
Bugs: Gnats and biting flies were out in force approaching treeline and in the scrub. Dead calm just about everywhere so there was little relief from wind. I broke down and put repellent on descending Sphinx.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Excellent loop in the Great Gulf. Six Husbands lives up to its billing as a steep and challenging trail. Many tricky ledge scrambles, ladders and other vertical elements which kicked my butt in the very hot and calm weather. Sphinx has a lengthy section of wet and mossy rocks to negotiate that required some care but was not overly difficult. There was quite a bit of mud and standing water on just about every trail today. The wet, mud caked boots were slipping and sliding on the rocks all day. Take care to keep your soles clean to avoid any mishaps.
