Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Several, but all very low and no problem.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in great shape. Only a few faded blazes on the North Slide, so don't count on them for navigation. The slides and the mountain are within the Sandwich Range Wilderness.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I wouldn't recommend bringing dogs on the North Slide, but it depends on the dog. Two people passed me on the slide with two dogs who appeared to be having a tough time. They seemed to be doing better when I saw them again on the South Slide.
Bugs
Bugs: Nope.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Lost some adrenalin on the North Slide. :O

Comments
Comments: After I had to bail on it last year due to wet conditions, I successfully climbed the North Slide yesterday. This one made me a bit uncomfortable in a few spots. Lots of room for error on the lower, smoother slabs if you aren't concentrating on your moves. But everything was bone dry this time, thank goodness. Lower down is trickier, but higher up is actually easier, with more coarse ledge and broken rock, and less slab. Also completely exposed at that point, which some may not like. I was happy to have the better footing. Best to stay left in the beginning, then cross out to the middle, then over to the right at the widest part. Be aware of who is above and below you on the upper sections, as its really easy to dislodge rocks and send them flying. Also watch out for a herd path that leads into the woods along the left side of the slide. I initially though it was part of the trail until I realized it wasn't. I am assuming this path is used either to bypass part of the slide, or for descent if you ever need to come down this thing (!!!). The trail leaves the slide near the top of the right fork, and continues up very steeply to the summit of the north peak. It was here I saw two guys who were headed down the slide. To that I say ... nope.

The rest of the loop was the typical steep and rough Tripyramids terrain. Steep climbs up to all three peaks, with lovely forested ridge walks in-between. Poor South Peak gets no love. Leaving there, the trail drops moderately, then very steeply to the top of the South Slide. I'd hiked this before, so I knew what to expect here. Much easier than the North Slide, with gravel and broken rock and no slabs. It's still a crazy steep drop, but not nearly as precipitous.

At the bottom of the slide, the MTT resumes being a trail again, and follows a logging road most of the way on easy to flat grades all the way back to the Livermore Trail. Then it's an easy road walk back to the trailhead.

Glad to finally get a stretch of dry weather for this. Don't even consider climbing the North Slide if it's wet!
