Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, July 4, 2010
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Excellent parking for several vehicles just off of the Kancamagus Highway.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The single brook crossing of any consequence on the route is rock-hoppable, mostly, but the soles of your boots will touch water.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One large blowdown on the Oliverian Brook Trail that's a straddle-and-slide-over. It'll require a chainsaw to remove.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Two or three brief scrambles near the summit may be troublesome for shorter-legged dogs. After the long flat stretch at the bottom, just after the trail comes close to a tributary of Oliverian Brook at 1,800 feet, water becomes a problem. The same tributary parallels the Square Ledge Trail in a few places 1,00 feet higher, but a 25-yard-or-more bushwhack is required to reach it. So carry extra water for pups. (Especially on a hot, humid day like today.)
Bugs
Bugs: Some down low, but tolerable with repellent applied.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: The Feathered Hat lost the feathers from his hat, but oh well. There are more where those came from.

Comments
Comments: This route begins with an extended flat stretch, much of it beside beautiful Oliverian Brook. Then it climbs 2,200 feet in about two and a half miles, including some pulls toward the summit that are fairly steep. It's a much less populated route to the top of Passaconaway than the usual over-Whiteface route, and offers some fine views at a couple of openings in the forest canopy. Six people and four dogs shared the lunch rock at the summit while I was there, and a good time was had by all. Great meeting everyone!
