Comments
Comments: The lower section of York Pond Trail beyond the split for Bunnell Notch Trail is very wet with tall grass and ferns. Higher up on the York Pond Trail there are open forest areas with lots of fern which hide the footway at times. WMNF sign in Willard Notch provides notice that the western end of trail is no longer maintained. Soon thereafter the Kilkenny Trail has a fork, take the rightmost trail to ascend Terrace Mtn. Short spur trail off Kilkenny Trail leads to summit. Scattered blow downs along trail which can be walked around or stepped over. Evergreen boughs intrude upon the trail on parts of Terrace Mtn. The Kilkenny Ridge Trail from Bunnell Notch to Unknown Pond is generally in good shape with no blow downs. The cabin has a posting indicating that an overnight stay will cost $30 per night. For those hiking up Mt Cabot be sure to continue on to the summit (signed) rather than ending at the cabin. The spur trail up "The Horn" was in good shape. Although the clouds blanketed the skies there were decent views of nearby mountains from "The Horn". A side trail (left of Horn spur trail on ascent) avoids the bouldery section however erosion is beginning on the improvised path. I was alone at the beautiful Unknown Pond. The Unknown Pond trail passed through open woods with ferns, however the vegetation was cleared from the pathway unlike the York Pond Trail and the Kilkenny Ridge Trail up Terrace Mtn. The Unknown Pond Trail had many wet sections. Although it was a wet trip with overcast skies it was a nice hike in the Great North Woods. Lots of moose tracks and droppings but I saw no moose.
