Comments
Comments: Part 3 of my Greenway section hike: started at Pitcher Mountain and took the blue blazed trail (shorter and steeper, but if you hike in the Whites you would not call it steep) up to the fire tower but turned left on the greenway immediately and left the tower for my return. Hiked north until I reached Adventist Church (7.3mi one way) where I had finished and turned around yesterday. Pretty hike with plenty of views, which the bugs (mosquitoes and black flies) did not let me enjoy much, unfortunately. Definitely got a few bites today. The campsite approx. half-way through that section was in great shape.
When I started my return trip, I decided to take the alternate route (blue blaze) from Adventist Church and am glad I did. It meanders as a smaller trail through a different section of the Andorra Forest and crosses more streams. While that meant that it was muddy in sections, the Greenway itself had plenty of mud near Adventist church when it runs on a snowmobile trail. In terms of mud and bugs, there was no difference between the routes, but I found the alternate route prettier. The trail also splits up at one point and gives you three options--the middle one was marked with Jackson Hill, and I chose it. It appears to be a new trail with relatively recent cutting down of trees and no clear footpath yet in most places but plenty of blazes--no chance of getting lost. This means I rejoined the Greenway at a different spot that on the currently existing map. I would have needed to turn right at that 'new juncture' that doesn't exist on the map to rejoin the greenway at the pond (as it is on the map).
By the time I was on my return trip the clouds had fully taken over the sunny blue skies from the morning, but the views remained the same. Enjoyed the fire tower (one can go up half way; the top is currently locked) and the 360 views before I took the official Greenway trail back to the parking lot. Beautiful way to spend the morning.
