Mt. Garfield, NH |
| Trails: |
Garfield Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail |
| Date of Hike: |
Friday, May 15, 2015 |
| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Gale River Loop Road was open so I changed my plan to do Garfield instead of Carrigain. |
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable) |
| Recommended Equipment: |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The two crossings were easy to do without getting boots wet |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The trail up to the fifth switchback was surprisingly dry. From there on the monorail began to grow in depth. But in the morning the snow was firm enough on the crown to carry me. Using some of the shallower postholes was another way to avoid my own postholing. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Dogs would have enjoyed the hike, plenty of water.
| Bugs: |
Had my bug spray with me but didn't need it yet. How much longer, though?
| Lost and Found: |
This time only a single sock and a dime. |

| Comments: |
Got an early start hoping the monorail would hold firm. I carried microspikes and snowshoes. Snowshoes are really not needed unless one would continue from Garfield on to either Galehead or Lafayette. The monorail is so narrow and postholed that the shoes make no sense. From the jct. up to the summit the monorail was firm and wide enough to kick steps into it and coming down just putting in the heels hard enough prevented me from any slipping. Just before getting back to my car I met a fast moving couple coming up who were in trail sneakers. I am sure they were fine getting up to the top. |
