Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Jefferson, NH
Trails
Trails: Jewell Trail, Gulfside, Jefferson Loop
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, April 13, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lots of hikers and skiers in the dirt lot below the cog railway station. The parking lot was icy in the morning and muddy in the afternoon but it created no problems. Base Road has some frost heaves (bumps) which are signed and not a problem at low speeds
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossed the Ammonoosuc River by the base station on a decaying ice/snow bridge in the morning. Used rocks to cross river in the afternoon as I did not want to test the strength of the bridge in the warm temperatures. The crossing of Clay Brook is on a man made bridge with about two feet of snow on top
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in good condition. A few trees across the Jewell Trail at such a high level that it requires an easy duck to avoid
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw no dogs on the trail today
Bugs
Bugs: Saw a few insects but they were not bothersome

Comments
Comments: The Jewell Trail below the tree line was a packed snowshoe track. In the morning bare boot hiking was okay as long as one stayed on the packed snow. By afternoon the snow was weakening in the heat so snowshoes were best for flotation. Above tree line there was a variety of surface conditions; bare rock, mud, spring run-off, frozen slush, and deep snow with postholes. Most of the hike I wore snowshoes but for some of the Gulside and the Jefferson Loop Trail I used microspikes. The foot traffic above tree line on the Jewell Trail strays from the actual trail. The current route crosses some vegetation that occasionally results in spruce traps.
