Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Got there early so lots of room in lot 1 by the trailhead. It looks like ski season is winding down, the lots weren't packed at 10:30.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The main 2 are still snowbridged, though the first looks like it won't last much longer. The stream at the trailhead is wide open, time to brush up on the rock-hopping skills!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One fairly large (~8") stepover blowdown a short ways above the first main crossing. Not a major issue.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw 3 loving life. Pretty easy as 4ks go for traildogs.

Comments
Comments: I put snowshoes on right after rock hopping the crossing at the trailhead and left them on until back to the same spot. Others on the trail were about a 60-40 mix in favor of bareboots/spikes. The slushy conditions at the start made the snowshoes a better option for me personally. Above the ski slope viewpoint the trail hardened significantly and snow depth increased to about 4 feet at the summit versus the handful of inches at the start (bare ground is not far away down low!). As things soften, barebooting will be a recipe for disaster, but this morning it was ok if you stayed firmly in the middle of the track. I opted to take the Mt. Tecumseh Trail all the way to the summit instead of taking the left fork onto the Sosman like most folks do. There was an old snowshoe trench with a breakable crust on the right side of the loop, I sank about 4-5" overall on average, so not bad. Took the usual superhighway down. Very windy up top, 27 degrees and 15mph winds measured through the trees, way more if you were in the open.

Still 4+ feet of snow up high folks, bring the snowshoes for when things soften!
