Used snowshoes for the entire hike. Especially needed higher up. Driving up in the morning, we were expecting cloudy skies, strong winds, and bitter cold, so we planned on hiking from the Basin to Lonesome Lake. When we got to Franconia Notch, the sun was out and the skies were clear, so it didn't feel too bad, and we decided to target a better viewpoint and hiked to the first open viewpoint half (?) a mile from the Cannon summit and didn't risk going any higher than that. This viewpoint is amazing on a clear day, and I think it's probably the best view of the Franconia Ridge. I've hiked this trail several times before in the winter, but I had forgotten how many times it crosses the Kinsman Glade ski trail. A few challenging steep sections along the ski trail. Snowshoes with good crampons, or just crampons are needed. |
