Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The parking area hadn't been plowed but with only 1-2 of new snow it was fine.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All bridged.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All fine. There are face slappers and ear spikers (thankfully when hiking such injuries only look bad; they don't hurt at all) in the trail corridor because the snow is so high.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper had fun. He did have some snow balling especially down low with the sticky new snow, but he's used to that. There were no open drainages.

Comments
Comments: There was 1-2" of new snow in the parking area, which was sticky, and that continued to the steeps. It slight balled up under our snowshoes but that was no problem. In the steeps, oddly, it seemed like there was under 1" of snow with a more sleety like texture. Up high there were a couple of inches of new more powdery snow with more falling through the day, but there was only minor drifting while we were there. Snowshoes were good for traction through the steeps biting into the butt slid base below on the hike up. On the ridge they were good for both traction and flotation. On the hike down we followed two butt sliders, and the butt slide areas were not amenable for an upright descent, with steps or glissades usually ending in butt slides by all. The snowshoe after that was wonderful.

Although the snow was a bit sticky in the morning down low there seemed to have been no rain. This was a classic winter hike, with no views but light dry snow and light winds. Conditions should remain good for snowshoeing with the additional snow. I was surprised by how few hikers there were on this popular hike for a winter weekend; only four others besides the three of us and Pepper. There was a small group going to Greeley Ponds. Pepper thanks Marty and Don for a great hike.
