 | Comments: |
Excellent day, moderate number of hikers on trail; always fine views, although areas of snow flurries N toward Presies obscured much beyond Crawford Notch. Any footware to falls; shallow loose snow up switchbacks argue for snowshoes for better traction (our Tubbs Flex=no slip). Above treeline, areas of blue ice and dense crust=some slippery stretches; we managed with Flexers, but a few managed with microspikes. At summit, ice ax was useful to chop a few steps. After upcoming freeze/thaw cycles, I would only go up with ice ax and crampons expecting treacherous ice.
Kestrel data: T=20F W= very variable, avg 18mph, gusts 38, WC= 2-6F minimal~-4F [NB: sunglasses/goggles for blowing snow if windy] |
