What a wild day! Despite being well prepared for the temperature, I had to turn back within 100 yards of the summit. First problem: the fan on my goggles committed suicide. The vapor that it was blowing out resublimed in the -20° air instantly and jammed the fan blades with ice. A few minutes without the fan and the lenses iced over to the point I could no longer see through them. Second problem: the wind picked up from the 40mph in the forecast to about 100mph in an instant, catching me out in the middle of the ridgeline and knocking me off my feet. That makes for a windchill of approximately FFFFFFUUUUUUU°, not good when you have an exposed face. I crawled back down the ridge with my face to the ground and amazingly made it home without any frostbite. |
