Comments
Comments: The facts : 6 - 8 down low increasing to 12 - 14 up high. We elected to descend the Avalon rather than follow our track back to the AZ because by the time we got back to Field from Willey (less than 2 hours) our track was obliterated. The depth of the trench is now about 20" up high. MWOBS and NOAA got the forecast for wind and cold pretty close. I frostbit my nose, something that I managed to avoid on Moosilaukee a couple days ago. To stand at the view to the West just South of Field and see the wind blowing the snow up and out of the trees in the Pemi was quite a sight. Opinion : Virtually no drifts on the AZ. Drifts on Tom spur are not too bad. Drifts from AZ to Field are plentiful and deep, very slowing. Drifts between Field and Willey and down the Avalon are in the not too bad category again. If you go up high in the next few days on a route that has not been tracked bring someone with you. Georg, who is a strong hiker as many of you know, was invaluable help with the breaking work and I greatly appreciate it.
