Trails: Dicey's Mill Trail, Rollins Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, February 3, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Ferncroft well plowed, no issues
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No issues down low. Big crossing on Dicey's Mill only partially frozen - we didn't dare use the log but crossed on mostly stable ice nearby. Little stream just above the Dicey's Mill/Rollins junction oddly open but easily crossed.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A handful of duckunders on Rollins but nothing terrible. All of the trail signs at the junction of Dicey's Mill and East Loop (where you take a left to go up to the summit of Passaconaway) are missing, made us question which way to go for a minute. (The bolt holes were visible on the trees so they weren't hidden under the snow). Rollins trail was difficult to follow in the more flat open area - blazes are faded and sparse on this trail, so new blazes would have been helpful since the trail was difficult to follow at times.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Hannah had a good day and was a real trooper with the snow and colder temps - dogs who don't do well with deeper snow might not do well until things get more packed out.

Comments
Comments: Did an out and back from Dicey's Mill to avoid the ledges and decrease the number of trail breaking miles. Started with 6-8" fluffy snow down low with an easily followed trench, increased to 10-12" near the junction with Rollins. A few deeper drifts headed towards Passaconaway but still easy to follow the trail. Rollins had a good 10-12" with areas of significant drifting, deepest one was just over waist high but multiple areas with 1-2'. There were traces of a previous trench in places but no sign in the flat open more drifted area which made trail finding tricky at times. We bushwhacked around some of the sketchy steep sidehills on the way up to Whiteface. No sign of activity up Blueberry Ledge since yesterday's snow. Good cruising down and out on the way back, though some of our tracks on the flatter windblown section had drifted in on Rollins. Beautiful to walk the last bit on the field and road under an almost full moon without headlamps. Broke trail the whole way today and didn't see a soul all day - trails are broken but no where near consolidated so please don't even think about not wearing snowshoes!! Very challenging and rewarding day playing in the snow - thanks Ali and Hannah for a great day and two more well earned peaks!!
