Comments
Comments: Strongly recommend crampons and ice axe if ascending Whiteface via Blueberry ledge. The technical aspect was fun and it was nice to be challenged. Until then I wore was microspikes. I did run into two guys who camped up top and were able to maneuver down the ledges with microspikes. However, they recommended crampons when I asked about the upcoming section, so it was a good thing I brought them. The ascent up blueberry was fast going until the ledges and it wound up taking me 3.5 hours from start to getting past the ledges. Once I got to Whiteface, I used snowshoes on the Rollins trail, where there was some powder and minor drifting. Met another guy hiking both peaks avoiding the ledges all together, using only microspikes. Once I reached Passaconaway, I changed back into microspikes and jogged down Dicey's Mill trail, which was very packed down. A great solo hike with awesome views on a warm, sunny winter day.
