Comments
Comments: Started in micros, used them to Gem Pool where we switched to snowshoes (though they would have been fine from the start too) - easily followable trench but 3-4" new snow. Telvators a big help getting up the steeps and snowshoes helpful because of drifting above the falls, deepest drifts were knee deep but not too much difficulty breaking trail and minimal problems with ice. We went left of the actual trail for the last tenth of a mile below the hut to get better footing, but be aware of large flow ice patches around the hut. Switched to Hillsounds for Monroe and were glad we did - only a few small drifts and mostly hard packed snow with a few icy sections and a bit of bare rock at the summit. Very windy on this stretch so we didn't linger long. Kept the Hillsounds on until the junction with Westside trail - good for the ice and hard packed snow but difficult for a few extended drifted sections so we switched back to snowshoes for the remainder of the trip (and were glad we did). Uneventful trip down with some great butt sliding on Ammo. Didn't see a soul all day (and no line at the Mt. W summit sign!). Very cold and windy as forecasted but great views all day.
