Comments
Comments: Gale River Road has a well-packed footbed from parking area to trailhead.

Down low, the Garfield Trail is a mix of bare patches (close to trailhead), blue ice, and packed powder. At higher elevations, snow is packed powder with an occasional bare patch or exposed rock, and a few postholes from folks who veered too far off the packed section. Summit is bare, with rime-coated rocks and some patches of blue ice.

Light traction made for quick moving on this. For heading further either way on the ridge trail, snowshoes are strongly recommended, as the snow is pretty deep in spots.

Past the summit, Garfield Ridge Trail west appeared to be broken by a couple of sets of snowshoes.

Garfield Ridge Trail east from the intersection with Garfield Trail was broken by a single set of snowshoes -- snow is several inches of power atop a three-inch crust atop another foot or more of powder. This is now packed to the campsite spur, and from there to the shelter, by a few sets of snowshoes. Past the campsite spur, the single set of snowshoe tracks continues east on the ridge trail.
