| Comments: |
Solo up to Monroe summit directly via Ammonoosuc Ravine & back the same. Ammo was hard-packed with a few icy spots. Upper Ammo below the Hut exhibited its typical winter braided form where some folks used the trail and some ascended via the frozen brook. Both are well trod. Monroe Loop was well packed except for the usual steep tricky spot halfway up where ice & snow drifts are a problem--multiple walk-arounds were apparent. Off trail snow throughout was very hard with crust and/or locked sastrugi drifts below a veneer of powder. Light traction the whole way, no issues though the less surefooted may wish for more aggressive traction on the steeps. The front that was moving in on the descent may change everything. |
