Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Garfield, NH
Trails
Trails: Gale River Road, Garfield Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 27, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The winter-lot was never plowed and is covered by snow-crust but access is easy. It was a full house today.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Open water everywhere - no ice - but the crossings are manageable with a couple of steps here and there on sub-merged rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A good 10-ish smaller and larger blowdowns on the trail. Bill Cronin was ahead of me and he took out a bunch (thank you, Bill). I removed the rest. There is a "widow-maker" about 2/3rds up the trail. It is an easy "duck-under" now but its attachment is not solid and it will come down at some point.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A good day for Shamus and Cinnilla. Trails are good for dogs - plenty of water and wet paws not a problem with the balmy temperatures.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: FOUND: Candy-bar wrapper, camel-back spout, some orange peel (no, not appropriate to leave in the woods) and 2 large cardboard boxes. Not expecting anyone to claim any of this. It has been removed and discarded.

Comments
Comments: The access road is covered by 2-3" of snow. The first half mile of the trail is mostly bare with some icy patches. After that snow covered sections interchange with snow-free sections - most of which are a mixture of slush, mud and standing/running water. Above 3,500' snow coverage is consistent.

Snowshoes stayed on the pack all day. I bare-booted to the summit and then used microspikes for about a mile on the descent.
