Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: only car there when we arrived? What no one hikes in a downpour on Christmas?? Two other cars upon our return. The road was easier on the way in, on the way out it had iced up significantly but I still had no problem with a two wheel drive with snow tires on it.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow - Spring Snow, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: the one significant water crossing required heavy teamwork. It was flowing strong! Two of us (Kali included) used the log, me the ever defiant one rock waded. Upon return it was almost easier to cross.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: lean overs and broken branches for everyone!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Kali had a great time and showed how closely she works with Mom at water crossings. She is an amazing trail dog!Once the rain cleared up she was rolling in the snow anyway!

Lost and Found
Lost and Found: nothing lost, nothing found, I brought down some spent hand warmers from the hut, don't you have a mother?

Comments
Comments: Decided to take the monkeys uncle up another four thousand footer. He was game for rain and so we decided on the way to head right for Cabot. No looking back, the rain was a coming when we arrived so we donned our water proof layers in the car, making last minute layer decisions that we were later pretty happy about. The Bunnell Notch Trail took a lower than normal track along the water for a long time before climbing out of the ravine and up to the junction. At the junction there was standing water some 15 inches deep! Good times, high and dry was our motto, it worked at some points and not so much at others. The trail was a stream up to the junction with the Mount Cabot trail. We were postholing in snow shoes and having a pretty hard time of it. Attitudes stayed cheery and I even tried to encourage Christmas Carols! Why not? Up the steeper section and into the switch backs picking up limbs and postholing away. It was an extremely tiring ascent. Into the Cabot Cabin and into dry clothes and food sacks we went. "I feel like a new man!" Ryan exclaimed, very happy to be dry. We found my name in the register 7 times. I need a life. Then up to the summit for photos and celebration and down again. The return was a little colder so the snow firmed up a little and we may have sunk a little less. Spirits were high and off to Christmas lasagna with the family we went! What a Christmas to remember! Two others on their way up upon our descent. The skies cleared and the day got better.
