Date of Hike: Tuesday, December 23, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The parking lot at Gale River Road is plowed, but I almost got my Impreza stuck in a drift at the front of the lot. To be safe, I parked in the nicely plowed lot at Trudeau Road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All bridged either fully or sufficiently.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: On the upper third, due to heavy snow in the trees, there were an unanticipated large number of bend overs, some requiring a major effort to break through or burrow under. The snow is deep, maybe three feet, so beware if venturing off trail.

Comments
Comments: Gale River Road was nicely packed, apparently by snow mobiles. The trail was broken with a snowshoe track evident almost the entire route. The lower third was hard packed, but then the trail became progressively more filled with sticky and heavy snow. The final ascent on Garfield Ridge trail was strenuous with a foot to a foot and a half of loose snow, requiring kick stepping almost the entire stretch. I saw no clear evidence that Garfield Ridge was broken heading toward the Twins. Starting down I was admiring my contribution to the snowshoe track when I met five young men barebooting up. Frustrating. Obviously no views today, but I got lucky with no rain before I got back to the car at 2:30.
