Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable)
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hops some with wet boots after finding a good route. For Pepper the same but on the way back he also decided to swim out into the fast current and ride it for a bit before heading to his target rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Sabbaday Brook in pretty good shape, mostly dry, wide and good surface. I took out a fair amount of small trees, removed branches on some larger ones that will require a bigger saw, and took out most or enough of the small branches where a crown blocked the trail. But there are a few stepovers and duckunders, one near the ridge trail and a couple down by the first set of stream crossings, that are now passable but need attention before the summer crowds come.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Great trails for the mighty tough little dog. He loved the brooks and the monorail pieces for their cooling effects and water supply. Some dogs might not like the stream crossings.
Bugs
Bugs: No problems. There was a breeze to help but I had a lot of stops on the way back clearing blowdown and only once or twice did I see black flies or skeeters. No ticks; well so far.

Comments
Comments: After reading reports from such noteworthy hikers as Rocket, Larisa and Becca, I decided the snowshoes could stay at home. They weren't needed. There still are bits and pieces of monorail on the ridge, with a couple hundred feet or so nearing south peak, and a longer stretch nearing north peak, but it generally held me up and if it didn't I could have just gotten off or at this time of year sunk in. The ledges on the steep section of Sabbaday had some wet areas that were slick, but with care negotiable without getting off to the side and contributing to widening the ledge. I hiked this trail once before but so long ago I didn't remember anything other than I did it with Pepper's predecessor Schnauzer, Shorty, the Lean Mean Hiking Machine. Sabbaday is a delightful trail as is the brook, the section swinging behind Fool Killer is still in hardwoods that are just beginning to leaf out and so the canopy is open, the crowds and bugs aren't around yet, and the stream crossings and monorail just fun additions. This is a great time to hike this trail; even better when using some more of last year's vacation.
