Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Twin Mountain, South Twin Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: North Twin Trail, North Twin Spur, herd path
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, August 11, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: A few cars when we got there about 8 AM, and lot was about full when we returned after the hike about 3 PM. When we got back there was an exceedingly strange old dude who had somehow managed to drive into the middle of the parking lot with his van pulling a camping trailer (with no license plate). I do not know what he was thinking. He said he was waiting for the cars to all leave and he would try to turn around (Good Luck with that.) Or else he was going to call AAA for help if he could borrow a cell phone (he also was about out of gas). I don't think backing a trailer up 2.5 miles was going to be a good option. He seemed awful interested in what we were drinking for our post-hike parking lot refreshment. We tossed it down as fast as we could and got out of there.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossings of Little River not too bad, but we bypassed the lower two crossings by using the herd path coming back.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail in good shape. There was evidence of recent brushing on North Twin Trail. There are a number of small mudholes in the col between the peaks but you won't lose your boots in them. We took the herd path on the return trip to avoid two brook crossings. Herd path is well-worn and easy to follow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Met a dog who completed a 25 mile two day loop. He seemed a little tired.
Bugs
Bugs: No serious issues. Flies at the summit of South Twin, maybe drawn there by remains of a couple of poorly executed unburied pit stops some slobs left.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Two towels tied to branches miles apart. Left them there.
