Trails: Castle Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, August 2, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Moderate sized dirt lot, fairly uneven in spots. No facilities. Not a fee area. There was a large snapping turtle defending the last remaining puddles when I was leaving. Watch where you park pulling in or out.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One crossing at beginning of trail was actually trickier than I was expecting. The official crossing involved several steps on rocks submerged 3-4" in a decent current, including one "step" of 4-5'. On way out I did the bushwhack crossing and it wasn't much better. Most rocks were 1" or so under but I had to make one step on a rock submerged about 6" with slimy moss and a fast moving current.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail in good shape. Well blazed to tree line and has cairns above treeline. Looks like some recent blowdowns were cleared out.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: There are several tricky scrambles on this trail that could be pretty tough for dogs but I suppose it wouldn't be impossible without assistance. There is no water on the trail. Saw no dogs today.
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitos were out in the lot and lower elevations and black flies took over higher up. Generally not biting though unless you stopped for a few minutes. Nice 5-10mph breeze above treeline kept them away. Didn't need repellent.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There was a blue t-shirt on a bush just after the "big boulder" and a full bottle of water about 1/4 mile after that. Still there.

Comments
Comments: Trail was generally damp to wet below treeline and dry after emerging from scrub around first castle. There were a lot of slick tree roots and rocks climbing away from river toward the flats past Bowman, and I had numerous near disasters in that area coming down. Recommend a little extra caution in there. The most difficult section is just past junction of The Link to the first Castle. There are numerous scrambles, including a slick ledge, two small chimneys and a craggy ledge just before first Castle. I didn't have much trouble ascending but coming down they all proved to be pretty awkward. Footing was fine beyond that. Good idea to have some compass and/or GPS experience for upper section. At about 4800' the footbed of the trail slowly blends in with the terrain and by the time you pass the junction of the Cornice the trail and surrounding rocks are indistinguishable. There are no blazes and the cairns from here are fairly small and blend right in with the surrounding rocks. In fog or poor visibility this would be an easy place to get disoriented and veer of course.
