| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parking for seven or eight cars at the Glencliff trailhead. I was astonished to see three cars in the lot when I pulled in this morning at 1:45 a.m. |
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail |
| Recommended Equipment: |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
All crossings easily rock-hopped. |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
No blowdowns and clear sailing. The Glencliff Trail is in great shape to the extent that it can be. The upper portion of this route is relentlessly rocky. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
This is a great hike for dogs, with two caveats. One, as noted above the upper portion of the Glencliff Trail is very, very rocky, and some dogs may tire from the constant stepping up (or down on a descent). Two, there is no available water above about 3,200 feet elevation, so carry extra.
This early morning's hike was the first complete hike I've made in the White Mountains without the company of at least one dog in about five years. I missed my guys -- but night hiking is beyond their present experience. |
| Bugs: |
Zero, except for the very occasional small moth caught in the light of my headlamp. |
| Lost and Found: |
Found one hiking sock on the trail and hung it on a nearby branch. |

The purpose of this hike was to join Brad Taylor at the summit of Moosilauke at sunrise to celebrate his completion of his "moon to moon" overage of all 48 NH 4K peaks. He began on Mt. Lafayette with the full moon on June 13 and he finished this morning. His accomplishment was made to benefit cancer research and patient services at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center; Brad raised more than $1,500 from his "moon to moon" hiking.
The night weather was surprisingly warm and humid and was really quite pleasant. I used a headlamp until the Glencliff's junction with the Carriage Road, which was beautifully, wondrously lit by the full moon.
Summit conditions were stellar, cool with just a bit of a breeze. If there ever was a night to climb Moosilauke, this night was it.
Congratulations to Brad!
Photos to come. |
