Comments
Comments: --Please note, this trail is considered closed per the USFS. Some hikers have been turned around by landowners in recent months.-- Finally had an opportunity to hike with "Pepper and Me", John Sorbetz. We first met on Lafayette two months ago. We went up on the Mt. Cabot trail from the west. There are more signs up now that say not to hike on the improved road than there were during the winter. However, we did see signs that indicated that a number of hikers are still using this access. The trail was wet, muddy in the usual section for about half a mile before you cross Bunnell brook. We were surprised about the few blowdowns, we removed two of them on the way down. Once past the jct. with the Kilkenny Ridge Tr. there were no blowdowns. It had been cold enough the night before and the monorail that starts soon after the jct. was solid and allowed us to bareboot to the summit and back without postholing, though we both carried our snowshoes. However, once the temperatures become more normal it might be a good idea to have them. From the cabin to the summit the snow is still deep but occasionally shows bare spots. Dogs and hikers had a great day.
