Did a one-day BAREFOOT (true barefoot, no footwear) Presi traverse, began 5:17am Appalachia, finished 8:45pm Crawford Notch, Madison through Pierce (leaving out Jackson which was not named after a president). Had already barefooted all of the peaks individually or in pairs, wanted to see if I could traverse all in one day. I put my shoes on only for the last 0.5 miles or so down, as it was getting too dark to safely hike barefoot. Most difficult part was crossing the rough felsenmeer descending Adams and of course the last couple of downhill miles. Strategy for doing this in daylight involved hiking very fast on uphill to make up for the necessary slow barefoot downhills and flats. Avulsed a little skin from the top of a little toe on Madison, but otherwise no injuries. Feet are predictably sore the following morning (no kidding) but OK. Thanks to Tom for the sunblock, Howard for hiking with me part way and getting me back to my car, and the encouragement of many other folks who I met along the way. |
