Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We got to Pinkham Notch before it was full. The full sign was up on our return. But even then after shuttling cars we could find spots as others had left. Appalachia in contrast, was full early on and late.

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Stepovers
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail maintainers have been hard at work. All the waterbars on Nelson Crag had been recently cleaned and a major blocking blowdown had been chopped out. On Lion Head we saw two guys clipping and cleaned waterbars. Thank you so much.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Great day for Pepper. There were a fair number of sip n dips through lower Nelson Crag, and fairly high up before Alpine Garden he found a great set of small pools to dip in. The sun was warm on his black fur but the cool temps and wind kept it from being an issue. He was fine with the crowds on Washington from the race, which weren't all that bad. Pepper even got to go around the Racer's tent and thought the turkey meals smelled so good.
Bugs
Bugs: A few black flies if stopped for long.

Comments
Comments: Above treeline it was much windier, chillier & foggier than the forecast I had been using; I pulled out the windpants and gloves. We ran into Clay and another photographer who had been there early in the morning and they said it was winter-like then. It was interesting watching the road racers from the trails. Afterwards there were lots of pained or at least unsmiling faces on the runners, but Larisa and Erica won the best smiles awards, at least as Pepper and I called it. We saw no one on Nelson Crag but doing down we saw lots of hikers, sometimes conga lines coming up Tuckerman Ravine and Lions Head. Tuckerman Ravine trail is apparently open all the way. It was funny how so many of the hikers were astonished Pepper had reached the summit. I was worried it would be a crazy scene at the summit, but it wasn't bad at all; and it was actually nice not to have to deal with the roar of motorcycles. It was a wonderful day on nice trails with great companions.
