Comments
Comments: lower mount kinsman trail in good shape. gets wetter and muddier once across the wmnf border with some good pits in spots and lots of water running on the trail higher up. brook crossings fine. some large blowdowns between the first and third crossings and others scattered among the route. full snow coverage starts roughly .5 from the ridge with some spotty snow before that. once on the ridge there is generally full snow coverage with some bare stretches in particular across the summits and on the south facing ledges. snow is generally solid if you can stay on the rail, but its starting to get undermined and rotten in spots. trail to bald knob has a couple blowdowns.
used snowshoes on the upper section of mount kinsman trail and on the ridge. had to come on and off a couple of times, but well worth it to avoid postholing. even with shoes getting to far off the center of the trail i would post through.
first time hiking the kinsmans from the west. a great trail. enjoyed the side trips to bald knob and down to the flume. great views from the kinsmans. i seem to always end up in the fog on these peaks, but it was beautiful today. great to be out.
