Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Stony Brook lot fairly full mid-afternoon, but still some room.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The main crossing a mile in was rock-hoppable at a few spots with mainly dry boots. All others were fairly insignificant in difficulty.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No blowdowns. I kicked clear a bunch of leaf-choked water bars, but some actual maintenance will be needed. Lots of mud and standing pools of water in many of the flat spots both on and below the ridge. Some might be temporary but many looked like they are always there. Some spots were pretty deep and going around on the sides of the trail was the only option. Even some good stepping stones would be a big help.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several, no major hazards though depending on the dog it may be necessary to keep an eye on them on some of the ledges with big drop-offs.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies out in the afternoon down low, not really biting yet, but it is only a matter of time...

Comments
Comments: Led this one for the Northeast Peakbaggers Meetup. We had a great group, and enjoyed the day. The sun was out for the majority of the day, and the views were terrific from all the ledges on the way along the Carter-Moriah Trail. A quick light rain as we descended the upper Stony Brook Trail, it lasted all of 5-10 minutes and felt pretty nice. The sun immediately came right back out. We spent most of the ascent along with a mom and her 7-year old son Matthew who were both great company, and congrats to you youngster on yet another 4000-footer checkmark!

Everything is in full on Spring mode on the Stony Brook Trail, including a fair number of both painted and red Trillium, and lots of green everything. Some lingering ice on the ridge, hut most was avoidable. The biggest patch is right at the Kenduskeag junction, but the scrambles up to the summit were clear.

Thanks Tom, Tom, Ted, Jason, and Forrest for the great company, and congrats to those earning checkmarks on their lists.
