Comments
Comments: Started up the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, but some others who had turned around noted that it was icy, so we turned around and headed up the Jewell Trail. The Jewell Trail was in great shape. Some mud down low which may get worse after the weekend rain. Used microspikes from about 4100 to 4600 feet. Just a thin layer of snow/ice of 2-6 inches. Used one-inch crampons on the same section on the descent for more stability, but microspikes are adequate. Definitely leave the snowshoes behind. No snow or ice from 4600 ft to the summit, save for one or two tiny patches. We lucked out with the weather. No wind and blue skies and had the summit to ourselves. As we expected, the observatory building was closed since the Cog Rail was closed and the Auto Road was not open to the summit, so if you head up midweek, bring enough water.
