On sunday we meant to take Gorge Brook Trail but mistakenly got on Snapper to Carriage Rd. Trail was mostly dry until 4,300 ft on Carriage Rd where there was almost 1/2 mile of soft snow until treeline. We postholed some but no traction need. On descent we took Gorge Brook and immediately got into packed down monorail with icy spots. Then it got worse, finally we donned Microspikes because of all the icy sections. Then we decided we could remove them but that was questionable as there was slushy snow, breakable ice, slushy pools of water all the way practically to the bottom of trail. We were wet and bruised from stumbling and hanging on to trees. So, Snapper Trail is much better choice between the two. |
