Rained until we were through the notch but Jefferson was dry. Encountered our first ice patch about 2 miles up the trail. Soon put on microspikes which were fine for the rest of the hike though there were many dry areas in between the ice patches. Halfway to Waumbek from Starr King the ice was wide and there was a monorail in variable condition to the top. Going up we admired the Trillium and the trout lily leaves but on the way down the place was a carpet of Spring Beauty, open trout lily flowers and lots and lots of trillium. A real spring show for the 9 OTHH hikers out today with one newbie on his first 48! |
