Started at 6:45am. Chose microspikes over crampons. Wish I had chosen the latter. Weather started to deteriorate almost immediately - windy and drizzling. Checked out Elephant Head, lots of postholes along the trail but narrow monorail was stable. Retraced my steps and proceeded up Webster-Jackson. Rain continued but about 1/3 way up, started to turn to snow. Trail had decent, packed monorail but lots of postholes along the sides almost the entire way up. Patches of ice were slightly melted, so traction with microspikes was ok. Snow became a little heavier as I made the junction with Webster-cliff trail. Traction remained overall decent until near the summit above tree line. Steepness and fresh granular snow covering ice made it difficult for the final ascent - crampons would have been much better. Made summit at 8:45am. Near whiteout! Proceeded immediately down. Really could have used crampons for the descent. Lots of ice/snowballing underfoot. Several areas were quite slick with wet snow and I ended up buttsledding by accident a couple of times. Snow never stopped. Got back to the car at 10:45. This was my first hike in a couple of months - a little challenging, but just reminded me how much I love to hike in winter! Didn't see anyone else the entire trip. |
