Comments
Comments: Excellent day above treeline despite the constant wind. Lots of sun and firm snow. I wore microspikes all day but carried snowshoes and crampons. Marlie and I had the the trails and Jefferson to ourselves until the final mile up Washington. The snowfields were all firm but provided good traction and smooth shortcuts. We cut high around the rim of Great Gulf as it was looking a little shiny. Skiers outnumbered hikers on the summit of Washington 4 to 1. The snow was much softer on Crawford Path and Monroe but still firm enough to prevent postholing. Lots of skiers heading down Ammo and Oaks Gulf. Slidig down the snowfield on Monroe on the descent was very fun. The Ammonoosuc Ravine Tr wanders below the hut and I quickly found myself in waist deep spruce traps. I would suggest snonwshoes in the afternoon but with careful foot placement I made it down the Ammonoosuc Ravine Tr without postholing. It was easy glissading and butt sliding, making it from the hut to Gem Pool in about 10 minutes!

It was an awesome day out with Marlie and it was nice run into and chat with Chris, Robi, and John & Pepper.
