Comments
Comments: Skied the ski area to the road to the first major river crossing about 1.5 miles up the GRT. Snow conditions were a little rocky despite LOTS of snow. Started out with around 6" new snow at the parking lot, gained depth until 10"+ along the ridge. At times, on the steeps of the Gale River Trail, snow was knee-deep. Despite the depth, the rocks made the footing very unstable and challenging. Despite the fact that I was using snowshoes, the trail is pretty rough. Along the ridge, I got to the sign 1/4 mi from hut. Soon thereafter, I lost the trail, tried to bushwack to the hut, tried to bushwhack to the summit, and just seemed to chase after openings that were not the trail again and again. I am guessing I cut uphill too soon? Finally, I reached my turnaround time, was soaked, and was totally spent. No views with all the snow. Still, it was a great day to have the mountain(side) to myself! :)
