Beautiful day out on the Presys. I had some concerns that the rain from the previous day had created icy conditions. Worries were unfounded. All the steep slabs of the Ammo trail were covered with plenty of crusty snow that provided good traction for snowshoes. Late day start and bright sunshine found the trail quite soft in areas... trail has been postholed to death by many bare-booters. Wore snowshoes the entire way up and back... attempted to squash down as many postholes as possible. Many were thigh-deep... someone must have had a miserable time doing the trail. Hacked-up areas near the top created some issues coming down, as it was difficult to find traction with 'shoes amidst the bare-booted mess. Trail from Hut to summit of Monroe was nice snowy crust with very little ice. Summit of Monroe was mud/rocks/grass! Started hike at 3 PM, Monroe summit by 5, hung out till 6 and realized sunset wasn't going to happen, down to hut and wandered around Lakes until 6:30, quick glissade down to car by 7:30. |
