Comments
Comments: An interesting day out! Got there about 9 and put on the snowshoes (which were used the entire hike though spikes would have been ok with how frozen the conditions were today). The stretch up to the second river crossing was a perfect monorail. No major postholes or issues. After the second crossing we entered an interesting section. The rain froze as ice crystals to all the branches and as the sun warmed the branches and the breeze swung them about we were pelted with hail like chunks all the way to the summit. Some chunks were quite large and truthfully very painful! We got soaked and battered on a beautiful blue bird day - not what we were expecting! The trail was in good shape with some post holing but with the ice chunks accumulating on the trail I am not certain how it turned out for the rest of the day/for future hikers. We left our bag with two snowboards at the Sosman junction and quickly summited, the views were incredible. And the trail was in good shape on the summit cone. We then returned to our bag and took Sosman trail to the ski slopes. The trail was very post holed and despite our best attempts to pack them down, they were pretty frozen in place. We followed that trail with no issues as there had been traffic on it, but we did not see any blazes. Once at the chair lift on the summit of Waterville we snowboarded down and enjoyed the rest of our $1 ticket on the slopes. A great day to be out!
