Late winter hiking is a study in contrasts. Most days you can strap on your spikes and walk the finest paved trail imaginable. Today was not one of them. I went up through 4 - 10" unbroken snow, wetter/heavier down low, good powder high. On the way down I passed an army headed up. Ok, not an army, but a platoon. Only one was wearing 'shoes and he was not with the rest. They all had 'shoes on their backs that cost 2 - 3 times the el-cheapos I wear. I asked several if they understood that the 'shoes would make the ascent easier. Some said they didn't speak English very well, some said "really?" Bottom line - Liberty Spring trail and wherever else the platoon went is now a churned up mess. |
