Comments
Comments: Used snowshoes the entire hike for heel lifts and extra traction on the packed areas of the ski trail. Where the skiers haven't been, the trail is a nicely packed snowshoe track. Where the skiers have been (much of the trail), things are well packed, but could be slick for those without traction. Crossings of the ski trail are easy to follow and the hiking trail leaving the ski trail is easy to see. Going up, the left path of the Rim Trail is less packed out and pretty choppy. Right path, is well packed and much easier. Steps up to the observation deck are mostly filled with snow, so going up/down would be tricky without traction.
Saw only two other hikers today (had a nice chat with Frank), and multiple skiers on and near the trail. Today was completely sunny with a temp of 13 on the summit with a windchill of 1 (7 mph avg. with 10 mph gust)
