Comments: Carter Moriah was a beast. Two gentlemen had tried to break it out the day before and didn't make it to the summit. They returned and did it the next day, I followed their tracks up. The drifting was deep, 4 feet in spots. Has to swim to the top of the steeps before getting back into shoes. Trail was partly broken out from there to the summit, I tried to bust it out real good, it was going to be my exit as well. The way back was all postholed by a group of 10, one of which had snowshoes and wore them. The summit had huge drifts, but a hard layer on top had firmed it, and snowshoes didn't sink in. The previous two hikers continued on Carter-Moriah Trail towards Mount Hight. Not sure how the barebooters did near the summit, it could be smooth, or shoulder deep postholes. Trail down the 19 Mile Brook was a sidewalk on my return, thankfully, I was pooped. Big thanks to the two gents who broke out the trail to the Dome, I wouldn't/couldn't have made my destination without your heroic efforts!
